The use of a solo 'cello reflects my interest in linear writing and was inspired by the playing of Hugh McDowell. The accompanying ensemble is used to add depth and point to the solo line, the 'cello may also be slightly amplified to give it extra resonance.
Squaring the Circle is made from two types of music, a slow melody and a rhythmic triplet theme. These alternate, converging in pitch tempo and character towards a moderato section which provides the work's summation.

The strongest was Tim Ewers' Squaring the Circle, in which alternating slow and fast sections gradually converged on an eloquent, sustained melodic line for 'cello.
