Originally written for guitar, Geometric Designs draws on the kaleidoscopic rhythmic patterns found in African mbira (thumb piano) music for its inspiration. This music provided me with a textural model which I thought would suit the guitar, but the result proved to be very technically demanding.
This arrangement for bass clarinet, marimba/vibraphone, viola and 'cello seeks to present the music in a more extrovert manner, and allows a wider variety of textures and timbres to be explored.
